The Houston Coast Guard, founded on April 12, 1898, is a part of the Texas Department of Public Safety. The Coast Guard has been providing law enforcement and security services to the citizens of southern Texas since its inception. The Coast Guard's first mission was to protect the interests of coastal residents by keeping them safe from pirates and other threats. In 1955, the Coast Guard assumed responsibility for protecting inland waterways in Harris County. This addition made the Houston Coast Guard one of the most effective maritime resources in SouthTexas. Today, the Houston Coast Guard operates over 100 vessels including 19 patrol boats and 9 helicopters. The Coast Guardsmen are responsible for conducting patrols along both Texas' coasts - from Galveston Island to Corpus Christi - as well as patrolling Jadejack Harbor off Clear Lake City in Harris County. They also provide support to state and local law enforcement agencies during emergencies such as floods or hurricanes. The Houston-based Sector 5Command provides operations center support for all aspects of Sector 4 Operations which includes coastal patrols and responses to terrorism events throughout southeast Texas; Search & Rescue missions when conditions warrant; Mercantile Marine Operations – which includes cargo movement through our ports; river rescues; offshore oil spills response; public information operations (PIO) ;and more!

On December 4, 1789, the first Coast Guard was established by Congress with a mission to protect American coasts and seas. In 1807, the Coast Guard became a separate service within the military and was renamed The Navy in 1812. The first coast guard station was established at Point Conception on Long Island in 1898. In 1916, Congress authorized the purchase of six coastal defense guns for use by The Navy’s Coastal Security Service. These guns were designated as CG-1 through CG-6 and were located at Governors Island, New York; Miami Beach, Florida; Key West, Florida; Jacksonville, Florida; and Gloucester County Naval Yard in Virginia.
