Humble, Texas is a small town in east-central Texas, located about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Austin and 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Houston. The population was 2,643 at the 2010 census. Humble's history dates back to 1836 when it was named after Major General James Humble and his family who settled there in 1836. The name `Humble` means humble or lowly in Indian language, and the original landholders were farmers. In 1907, a post office called `Humble` was established in honor of Captain John Humble, an American Civil War veteran who had fought for the Confederacy. In 1924, the name of the town changed to its current form when it became an incorporated municipality. The first settlers in Humble arrived from Kentucky and Tennessee overland during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). They were led by Colonel John Swayne and Captains George Pollock and William Brown, all members of Company K Sixth Cavalry Regiment which served under General Sam Houston on his ill-fated attempt to lead a Plains campaign against Mexico with 1,200 horse cavalrymen under command. On July 28th 1836 Wm Brown came across the Rio Grande near present day San Marcos while on his way to meet Commodore Perry’s forces off Acapulco Bay He found water enough but no game so he built himself a cabin on some high ground between now known as FM 925 Nueces River Road and Cedar Creek Road about 8 miles west of what is now downtown Humble This location still exists today as part of Live Oak Park Cemetery just east of FM 925 North just past junction with HWY 290 North These early pioneers would continue to live here until well into World War II . The earliest deed for `Hummel Prairie` can be found dated October 4th 1839 written by A D Fordyce alias James Hardcastle It shows that four years earlier than later ranchers Lorenzo Hicks Prescodt & Henry McGee had also acquired some . 30 acres situated north side Brazos River between Brazos & Cypress Creek being valued at $375 per surveyor’s certificate one can only imagine how this remote area must have looked prior à those days with dirt roads only 12 feet wide most likely averaging 50 yards wide
