In the early 1900s, Huntsville was a small town in Texas that was known for its coffee. The first coffee house in Huntsville was founded in 1898 by John Ladd and his wife, Fannie. The couple opened the first co-op in Huntsville and served coffee until about 1914. In 1928, Mr. and Mrs. Kapp started the first grocery store in Huntsville and sold coffee from their store until 1933. In that year, they combined their businesses to become the first caffeine company in what is now Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Kapp Coffee Company continued to serve quality coffee until it closed its doors on October 12th, 1973 due to financial difficulties. For many years after its closure, people who lived near the store could smell the beans roasting inside of Mr. Kapp's store!
