Hurst, Texas is a town in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Hurst dates back to 1873 when settlers from Alabama and Georgia arrived in what is now Collin County and began moving eastward towards the Arkansas River. By 1881, most of present-day Hurst had been founded. In 1889, George Waddell opened the first store in what is now Hurst. A post office was established in 1893, and by 1901 the population had reached 2,000 residents. In 1902, Harry Hirschman organized an agricultural society which later became the Farmers' Bank of Hurst (FBH). The bank financed a number of local businesses including a sawmill, cotton gin and fertilizer plant. In 1915 FBH merged with another agricultural society called American Land & Loan Company to become American Land & Mortgage Corporation (ALLOC). ALLOC purchased land for grain farming near Fort Worth and built a grain elevator that served as their main business center until it was destroyed by fire in 1961. In 1925 ALLOC bought two thousand acres adjoining Prairie View A&M University for use as their new corporate campus; however this plan never came to fruition due to financial difficulties experienced by ALLOC during World War II when much of their acreage was used for military purposes only. Alloc also developed a small water power industry which produced electricity for light bulbs and radios throughout much of Dallas-Fort Worth area until it stopped production in the early 1970s because of environmental regulations put into place following Watergate Hearings CEFCO Energy filed court papers opposing US District Court Order compelling them to produce more energy using coal plants rather than oil or natural gas - this decision effectively ended all open access uranium mining operations within TXU boundaries) After years of difficulty securing financing they partnered up with Pembroke Coal Mines Incorporated who leased them land adjacent to their mine workings on Goliad Creek where they were able to commence mining gold until 1974 when all mines were closed due to overproduction caused by changes brought about by technological advances such as hydraulic fracturing which made it possible for companies like Encana Gas Partners LP (EGLP) to extract natural gas from shale formations under Texas) .
