In 1907, John Moses Browning made his first gun purchase in Hurst. He founded Browning Arms Company with one goal: making firearms that could efficiently kill animals during hunting expeditions. In 1912, Browning was granted a weapons license by the state of Texas and began producing pistols under his own name instead of using Harry Wennessey’s name pending approval from his brother-in-law, Jesse James (founder and CEO of Colt). Browning soon became well known throughout Texas for his high quality pistols and rifles. His products won awards from both law enforcement and civilian users alike. In 1935, he merged with Colt Corporation to form The National Rifle Association (NRA).
