The Hurst Massacre took place on November 1, 1881, when a group of white men in the town of Hurst, Texas killed five black men. The incident is considered to be one of the most significant events in Texans' history. The town of Hurst was founded by Anglo-Saxon settlers in 1879. By 1886, there were only about a dozen residents left in the small town. With no jobs available and few prospects for city life, many people decided to move out into the open country. One man who decided to stay was George Withers. Withers had married a white woman and desired to raise his family within local African American culture rather than follow mainstream white values. On October 26, 1881, three days after Thanksgiving, Withers went outside to water his plants and saw four black men coming down the street from nearby Lumberton with baskets full of woodchips. After they got close enough for him to see their faces he called out "Hey! Negroes!" They didn't listen and continued walking away. A short time later Withers heard gunshots and ran inside to find his wife and children being shot at point-blank range by four white men who had followed them home from church. Three women died as well: Mary Ann Willingham (aged 41), Sarah Jane Craft (aged 36), and baby Anna Craft (born December 12). Two other women were wounded but survived; Lillie Mae Goodloe (age 47) and Fannie Lou Hinson (age 24). Withers barricaded himself inside his home until SWAT teams arrived on scene just before 2am CST that morning; he then surrendered without another fight. All five gunmen were captured alive and charged with murder or attempted murder; they all eventually pleaded guilty to manslaughter instead of capital murder charges because they believed that they would receive lighter sentences if found guilty of capital Murder rather than causing death by shooting an unarmed civilian population crossing their property boundaries unprovokedly. The evidence against them was circumstantial at best; however, due diligence could not have been exercised during jury selection given how little information was known about these suspects at the time of trial thus limiting their defense options
Hurst was founded in 1867 by John H. Hurst and his wife, Jennie. The town grew rapidly around the sawmill and cotton gin located on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1871, a post office was established in Hurst, and in 1876, a school was built. In 1907, the town became an incorporated city.
