Hurst, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 1,461 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-The Woodlands, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included within the Houston–The Woodlands–Bryan Urban Area. Founded on August 10, 1871 by James Hurlbut and other pioneers as "Hurstville", Hurst became a town after it was annexed by Austin on January 1, 1872. The first post office in Hurst opened on September 15, 1870. By 1899, there were over 100 businesses in Hurst with a population of 624 people total. In 1912 an oil well was drilled in what would become known as the "Hurst Field" and production began immediately; this led to increased development around the well site with new homes being built and businesses established soon thereafter. In 1916 over 2200 people lived in Hurst with 400 businesses employing them all; this number had grown to 4500 by 1925 when World War I started providing employment opportunities for many of those who lived in town during wartime times (See also: Timeline: History of Hurst). After World War II ended, growth slowed until the early 1970s when then Mayor Donny Hathaway initiated an effort to revitalize downtown using such initiatives as community center construction and various art programs Downtown which quickly achieved success becoming one of America's most popular tourist destinations among young adults due to its innovative architecture along with its lively nightlife scene that featured several nightclubs/bars/restaurants/theaters throughout downtown during any given weeknight period (See also: Timeline: History of Hurst). In 1984 Mayor Hathaway designated Thurston Avenue between Lamar Boulevard and Dayton Street as an "official" commercial district & Main Street from Lamar Boulevard eastward became known locally as "Queen's Row". By 1990 more than 12800 residents lived or worked within Downtown boundaries making it one of America's fastest-growing urban areas while still maintaining its authenticity as a small town atmosphere (See also: Timeline: History of Hurstertown). Hurst, Texas is a small town in Jack County, Texas. The population was 1,541 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Jack County and the only municipality in the county. Hurst began as a stagecoach stop on the old Santa Fe Trail. In 1876, it became one of the original towns in Jack County when it was organized from portions of Brown and Wichita counties. The post office at Hurst was established in 1881 and continued to operate until it was discontinued in 1898. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Hurst were James Wuthering and his family who arrived around 1830 from Kentucky. They ranched land for six years before moving to Fort Worth where they erected a log cabin on a bluff overlooking Clear Fork River. Wuthering died soon after arriving here and his wife kept their cabin until she sold it to John Hargrave about 1840 for $8 per acre (1¢ per foot). The early influences on the town may have come from these pioneers or from those who preceded them such as William Jarrell who settled near present day Bowie Creek in 1834 with his family. A grant of 640 acres (24 hectares) west of present day Hurst by Presidio President Antonio López de Santa Anna granted Rancho Brazos de Jiménez to José María Pinto Cisneros on November 7, 1794 which led to its namesake rancho being named for him - Pinto Chávez Cerro (Hill Peak), located near Bowie Creek today’s junction with FM 620 north of town center Hurst's beginnings can be traced back even further than this though – its first known settler(s) were George Ewing and his family who arrived around 1800 from Virginia along with their cattleman brother-in-law Nathaniel Chapman Ewing homesteaded land east of present day Bowie Creek on what would become part of what is now called Ewing Ranch which encompass today's entire city limits including parts or all of downtown Houston Nathaniel Chapman homesteaded land three miles due north along Clear Fork River within modern-day Hurst which would later become part of Neches Township The earliest reference to an event that took place during this time period that has been corroborated by historical records is an account given by Gabriel Gonzales about February 21, 1802 when he mentioned seeing men driving cows into camp over night outside present day Bowman Creek east side Of town Limits
The Hurst area was first settled by the Kiowa and Comanche people in the late 18th century. The area became part of Texas during the Mexican-American War, when it was taken from Mexico. In 1848, a group of Anglo settlers named John Neely arrived in what is now Hurst and began to farm land. The town name was given to them by General James H. Wilson after he conferred with Neely about how best to protect his men on the frontier from hostile Indians. The town grew rapidly, and by 1850, there were over 100 residents living in what is now Hurst. In 1852, a post office was established at Hurst, and within a year, the population had increased to over 250 people. By 1860,Hurst had become an important center for trade with surrounding counties as well as its own economy.during this time period many businesses including grocery stores and hardware stores developed along Main Street which still exists today
