In 1840 Juana de la Cruz married Fernando de Cisneros y Real which removed any obstacle to English settlement in eastern Jackson County and opened up new land for farming that would become downtown Jacksonville today. James Gadsden became owner of Gadsden Purchase No 4 (now known as Parkland) on November 3rd 1841 just south of present day downtown Jacksonville when he purchased 5 square miles including all that now makes up Parkland from Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna’s commandant at Galveston Landing northeastward until his purchase was rescinded eight years later by US President James Kossuth because Lopez did not acquiesce to US demands for military support against Santa Anna’s Mexican army during the Mexican War (1846-1848). It was founded by Texans with the name of Jacksonville for both military and naval purposes. The first post office in Jacksonville was established on December 12, 1875. parts of present-day Webb County were annexed to Jacksonville in 1907. The city has since grown rapidly with annexations from other counties and municipalities within Webb County. The history of Jacksonville begins with the Mexican War when General Antonio López de Santa Anna led an army through what is now Webb County to attack Mexico City after being impeached as president of Mexico in 1846. At the time there were few settlements east of the Brazos River and most people lived near Austin or San Antonio because those were their main trading ports. On December 12, 1875, General John Fenton Houston wrote a letter to his father-in-law James Kreeger recommending that they move their family from Galveston to new land north of Corpus Christi because it would be "a little difficult but not impossible" to get passage on the steamboat Rio Grande if they remained living in Galveston Bayou (now Houston Ship Channel).Houston's wife Fannie gave birth to her first child Banbury Houston on December 14th and named him John Kirby Houstoun after her husband lieutenant general Kirby Houstoun who fought at Monterrey during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). A year later on January 2nd, 1876 JFH moved his family into what is now Downtown Jacksonville when he purchased 5 lots at Fourth Street & Market Streets from Domingo GomezJiménez for $100 each plus interest which he paid off within two years .On November 20th 1880 JFH married Mamie Leroy White also known as Mamie Lou White; she had been born March 22nd 1865 in Columbus Junction, Missouri while her parents James Leroy White Sr., Jesse Leroy White Jr., and Elizabeth Ann “Lena” Hagerty were visiting relatives during the monthlong stay of their brother Archibald Stephenson (March 21st - April 4th) at Padre Island Naval Station before sailing back home via Galveston Bayou where they arrived on April 10th . They returned home late one night and went straight to bed – something that would become quite common among immigrants due to lack of sleep during this time period .They had two more children: Willie Neal Houston born February 7th 1881 and Carrie Leeborn May 6th 1883 before moving back out onto Fourth Street & Market Streets where they resided until 1917 when they bought 3 more lots for $130 each adjacent to their original property making it total land purchase worth $2,500 .Once again JFH demonstrated his entrepreneurial skills by creating a business doing contracting work for local farmers including grading roadsides for planting cottonseed; building sheds/houses/ barns; installing water systems; testing wells etc.; later selling these services directly to landowners throughout northeast Texas In 1917 JFH along with his son Willie Neal Houston opened up what became known as simply "Houston's Grocery" located at Eighth Street & Dawson Road across from downtown Jacksonville proper serving local merchants such as Sam Rayburn (owner grocery store), Wm Mosey ( Owner Bottling Works next door), Gertrude Keyes (owned dry goods store), Mrs. Clarence McCullough( proprietor barbershop) among others until 1949 when it closed its doors following Hurricane Emma which destroyed much valuable property within downtown Jacksonville including "Houston's Grocery" building but not before helping contribute significantly towards giving rise today’s downtown area bounded by Eighth Street NW / Dawson Road NE / Arlington Drive SW / Polk Avenue NE
