The Katy, Texas Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The unit was first organized in 1846 and served in various campaigns during the Mexican-American War. In 1942, the regiment was reorganized as the 5th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and deployed to Europe with World War II troops. After spending three years in combat, the brigade returned home and was reassigned to support Operation Desert Storm in 1990. The brigade has since been mobilized multiple times for peacekeeping missions throughout Latin America and Africa.

Polk signed House Resolution No. 2 creating the Republic of Texas with its capital at Galveston in downtown Houston The land for today’s Katy was given to James Bowie by the Mexican president Santa Anna following his successful campaign for governor of Coahuila and Tejas during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In exchange for this land, Bowie received $5,000 worth of goods including horses, mules and cattle In 1840, John Smeaton purchased some adjacent property which became known as Smeaton Heights after him In 1845 he leased some more land from Santa Anna which became known as White Settlement due to its high percentage of whitequote planted cornfields

Katy, Texas is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Midland–Odessa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Katy Railroad was founded in 1881 by Captain John S. Hill and construction began in 1882. Katy reached its peak traffic in 1915 with 2 million passengers traveling on its tracks each year. In 1925 the company merged with the Houston and Texas Central Railway to form the Houston-Montgomery Line (later called TX Central). Passenger service ended in 1951 when ownership of the line was transferred to Southern Railway Company. In 1926 local businessman James Giddings purchased 4 miles of track from Southern Railway Company right next to his ranch for $10,000. Giddings renamed his new city "Katy" after his wife's birthplace in Missouri - also located within Midland County - and started construction on what would become one of largest shopping centers west of Dallas/Fort Worth: The First National Bank Plaza (now known as Independence Mall). At first it housed only local businesses but soon other merchants followed suit and then Giddings built a second mall which became home to Sears, Kmart, JCPenney and many more stores throughout its years of operation. Today it is still a popular shopping destination for locals and tourists alike and forms an important part of downtown Katy today
