Keller, Texas is a small town in the Cotton Belt region of Texas. It is located in Hidalgo County, about 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Houston and 15 miles (24 km) southwest of San Antonio. The population was 3,871 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in Keller were farmers who arrived around 1836. In 1876, Frank Keller homesteaded land on what is now Third Street in the center of town. The town was named after him. In 1903, Keller became official capital of Hidalgo County when it was moved from Mckinney to that location following the county's creation as a separate Union Territory from Mexican state of Coahuila and Tejas. In 1911, Jack Kemp was elected mayor and served two terms before being impeached by the Texas House of Representatives for perjury and other charges related to his political campaigns during World War I. In 1916 he won election as governor with 66% of the vote against incumbent State Senator James Gorman; however, Kemp resigned due to financial troubles soon after taking office. Doris Kearns Goodwin wrote her Pulitzer Prize-winning book "The Great Society" about American social movements such as Roosevelt's New Deal and Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty which occurred during this time period in Keller's history. When Goodwin visited Keller in 2013 she said that "the city has never really recovered from itslost decade", evidenced by an increase in crime rates over the past few years which have particularly impacted businesses downtown including A&P Supermarket and City National Bank which are both members of Citizens United v FECCA case where they were among several entities shielded from campaign finance laws by their corporate owners US Supreme Court ruling earlier that yearPNL Corporation v Federal Election Commission). Keller was founded in 1881 by John Keller, a blacksmith. The town's namesake, John Keller, is also the namesake of the Keller brothers restaurant chain. The town became a psychiatric hospital in 1939 and continued to be used as such until it closed in 1993.
