Kerrville is a town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,724 at the 2010 census. It was founded by John Kerr in 1876 and named for him. The town has been incorporated since 1907. The first settlers in Kerrville were farmers who had come from Kentucky and Tennessee. They established their homes on land that is now the city of Kerrville. In 1876, John Kerr settled in what is now the city of Kerrville and started to build a log cabin. He named his new settlement after himself, which means "John's Settlement." In 1907, the Texas Legislature created Medina County and passed an actocating Kerrville as its county seat. At that time, it was one of only a few towns statewide to have its own government separate from the county governments in which it resided. The city of Kerrville was formed in 1965 when the merger of two adjacent rural municipalities within Medina County: Hondo and Spring Branch. The merged municipality had a total population of 4,461 residents then - more than double that of any other municipality within Medina County at that time! When it became apparent that annexation into larger cities would not be possible without approval from both communities’ respective governments - as was required for most municipal mergers then -the City Council adopted Resolution No. 3999 asking for help from the State Government to annex into larger cities through legislation so this could happen “as soon as practicable” (in other words very quickly). This request led to passage by the State Legislature on October 15th 1966 of Senate Bill No 6073 authorizing annexation by Kerrville into Austin-Round Rock-San Antonio combined under one entity with all necessary approvals received! And so on January 1st 1967 – all those years ago today – we are proud residents of our beautiful city!
