The first military gift to reach Kilgore was a rifle, given by the Confederate States of America in 1861. The town's first post office was established on December 6, 1867. By 1900, Kilgore had a population of over 1,500 residents and 300 businesses. More than $1 million worth of gifts were exchanged between service members and civilians during World War I.

Kilgore is a town located in Sherman County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Kilgore was James Hays on May 15, 1845. He and his family were the first white people to live there. By 1858, Kilgore had a school and three stores. A post office was established in 1859 and remained in operation until 1896. The town was platted on July 16, 1865 by Wm. J. Dixon of Wichita Falls as an unincorporated community named for General Robert Ewell Kilpatrick who had died two years earlier while campaigning against Mexican forces near present-day Beavercreek creek junction (now Pecan bluffs). Dixon's original intention was to name the community "Dixonville" after himself but he changed it to "Kilgore" because that's where General Ewell's home lay before he became famous as a hero during the Personal Lawsuit Campaign of 1884-1885 (the largest civil case ever tried in U.S.). In 1886, Methodist Episcopal bishop John Wesley Smith came to Kilgore with his wife Cissy from Corinth and built a church which became known as First Methodist Church of Sherman County (later called First Baptist Church of Sherman County). In 1898 Mrs. Smith donated land for a high school which served local students until 1963 when it closed due to budget cuts by then-Sherman County Superintendent Gilberto Linares; however local students still attend Wilson High School adjacent to First Baptist Church today.) When First Baptist Church burned down in 1951 it became known as Community Bible House before being purchased by the current owners in 1984 and renovated into an award winning antique/furniture store; currently operated as The Olde Hickory House Museum! Kilgore has six businesses: two churches (First Methodist Chapel and First Baptist), one hospital, one grocery store/convenience store, one printing press shop(s), one restaurant/barand grill(s), two schools - Wilson Middle School & McKinney Intermediate School - one library - Third Sunday Services at Christmastime at First Methodist Chapel each year since 1965 KFC opened up here back when they were just starting out back then... so you could go anywhere else if you wanted chicken
