Kilgore, Texas is a small town located in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. Kilgore is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area and is the county seat of Johnson County. The community was founded in 1876 by Methodist missionaries. It post office was established in 1881. The town's name comes from an early settler, Hugh Gorman Kilgore, who named his land "Kilgore" after his home state of Kentucky. The first store opened in 1886 and the first railroad reached Kilgore in 1889. A school was built in 1896 and it became a full-time public school district in 1898. A courthouse was built on Main Street in 1907 and it served as the county seat until 1913 when Junction City replaced it as the county seat because of its larger population and more resources. Kilgore is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Texarkana metropolitan area. Kilgore was founded in 1877 by John A. Kilgore and his wife Martha (née Cochran). The town was named for General J. B. Kilgore who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Texas from 1901 to 1905. When Johnson County was established in 1876, it still included parts of what are now Kaufman and McPherson counties. In 1881, when these counties were split off, Kilgore became part of Johnson County and remained so until 1907 when it reverted back to its original name.[2] The discovery of oil some miles east of present day Kilgore led to increased development around the town during the early 1900s; oil production began on land leased from Eglin Oil Company in 1902[3][4] and continued until 1984[5]. As one result of this growth, much infrastructure had to be built: a hospital (1903), high school (1899), post office (1898), store (1898), fire station (1902) and several homes were constructed nearpresent day FM 1520/US 281.[6] The first gas lighting came about 1903 with installation by an entrepreneur named Clements who also built a small refinery nearby which produced gasoline for automobiles – an early example of a large industrial complex in that region.[7][8] In 1911 voters passed an ordinance setting up a City Manager form government for the new town; however due to lack of resources this form only lasted two years before being replaced by mayoral government with elected officials responsible directly to the people through city councils made up entirely or nearly entirelyof farmers according to historian Patricia Kappeler – making KilgORE one of very few towns throughout the country where agricultural representation predominated over commercial interests during this time period,[9][10][11][12] despite having no Census data available dated earlier than 1890![13] In 1924 local banker Waddell Avery donated more than five acres adjacent to present day FM 1520/US 281 for building what would become known as Avery Stadium which would serve as home field for many local sports teams beginning with baseball in 1915; currently playing host to various college games includingOklahoma Sooners men’s basketball
In 1881, a group of Texans who had escaped the American Civil War settled on what is now Kilgore, Texas. They named their new community after General Sam Houston and his army. The people of Kilgore soon began to develop their town into a thriving community. In 1925, the first post office was established in Kilgore. In 1946, Kilgore became an independent city. It experienced some growth during the 1970s and 1980s as oil production increased in the area. Today, Kilgore is a vibrant community that continues to grow with its strong economy and expanding cultural opportunities.
