Kilgore is a town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known inhabitants of Kilgore were the Kiowa and Comanche Indians who camped along the banks of the Canadian River in 1794. In 1819, James Fenton organized a wagon train from Houston to Santa Fe with his family as guides. They reached Kilgore on October 12 and started homesteading their land near present day Slaughter Creek. In 1836, Kilgore was established as an independent settlement by James Fenton and other pioneers including Daniel Boone and John Wesley Hardin. The town prospered because it was next to cattle drives that brought supplies to Texans fighting in the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1859, Kilgore became one of eight towns established by Act of Congress for the “maintenance” of American Indian Territory under direction of Ulysses S. Grant during Reconstruction following the American Civil War (1861- 1865). The post office at Kilgore began operations on November 3, 1861, serving residents within what is now Hudspeth County only. On May 14, 1872, a fire destroyed most of downtown Kilgore but did not destroy important buildings such as the courthouse or jail which remain today a reminder of how vibrant and prosperous Kilgarrytown once was. A local resident named Wm Henson donated land on which current day Green Street stands side by side with Main Street in 1915 after he saw an opportunity to develop land across Slaughter Creek from where he lived until then alluvial soil had deposited building material over 100 years ago creating large difficulties for anyone wanting to erect any kind of structure above ground without risking damage from landslides or floods that frequently occurred during those times when water levels were high enough to swamp small villages like his own homebuilt on top soils that were about 10 feet deep at low tide) .
