Killeen, Texas is a town in Denton County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. Killeen is home to the University of Texas at Austin and the largest concentration of Hispanic people in America. The namesake of Killeen is Samuel P. Killeen, who came to this area from Tennessee in 1836. He founded what would become Denton County on November 3, 1837. In 1870, John Witherspoon bought land here and named it after him; he had been born near present-day Clearwater also in Denton County. A post office called Killeen was established in 1873, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1901 the town incorporated as a village under the name of Clearwater; it reverted to its original name two years later when incorporation into Denton became an option for residents only because Clearwater already had a city government with that name. The first white person to live in Killeen was James Haney (1859-1929), who arrived from Arkansas during Reconstruction and opened a grocery store there around 1880.
