The Marine Corps has deployments throughout the year, and sometimes Marines must leave town for weeks at a time. This means that there is often an opportunity to send someone a gift. Many Marines enjoy sending gifts, as it shows that they care about their friends and comrades. In 2012, the Killeen-based Battalion Landing Team (BLT) sent a team of Marines on deployment to Beirut, Lebanon. The BLT was tasked with providing humanitarian relief in the wake of the Lebanese Civil War. The battalion’s chaplain, Father John Neumann, traveled with the unit and gave outoling to soldiers and civilians alike during their stay in Beirut. Neumann also made sure that everyone received appropriate gifts upon their return home. One Soldier from BLTwrote: “Father John [Neumann] took great pride in himself as our Chaplain for all those who were deployed with us – he always went above and beyond his job role to make sure everyone received what they needed or wanted even if it wasn’t easy or possible for them to do so themselves! It was truly amazing how much he loved his work here in Killeen and we are grateful for his guidance as well as friendship over these past few years while on deployment!”

In Killeen, Texas, Marines deployed a gift history of service in support of the Department. The Marines have deployments every two years and each deployment brings with it a new set of gifts for their troops. This year's deployment is no different and they are hosting a holiday party to celebrate their service.
Killeen, Texas is a small town in southeast Texas. The population was 2,500 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of El Paso County. The first settlers in what is now Killeen were farmers and their families who arrived around 1845. They named their settlement after General James Hogg, an early settler in this area. The town began to grow rapidly during the late 19th century as cattle ranching became popular here. Businesses include several banks and truck stop/motel complexes which still operate today. Killeen is located on I-35 just south of downtown El Paso and about 25 miles northwest of Austin, TX. Interstate 35 runs through the heart of Killeen and forms its eastern border; it features a single exit ramp that leads from I-35 east to US 281/US 287 and then north to Killeen proper (the western edge of which is built on artificial hills). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters; however, there are some notable exceptions such as warm temperatures in summer months near Niagara Falls or during winter when air temperature readings can exceed 50 °F (10 °C). According to the Killeen Independent School District website, "the average high temperature during school days ranges from 85°F (29°C) up until 106°F (41°C) while evening lows drop into the low 40s (−8°F (−26°C) most weeks". However, according to Weather Underground data for January 1st - September 30th 2017, Killeen had an abnormally high temperature for that date: 108 degrees F (+43 degrees C)!
The Marine Corps has been deploying gifts for years to support and commemorate service members. Gifts have included Battalion, Company, and Battalion-level insignia, buttons, and medals. The Marines also distribute postcards and other items to the families of service members. Gift history began in 1855 when a group of marines from New Mexico donated a uniformedo to the Marine Barracks at Quantico. This event is considered the beginning of gift giving within the Marine Corps. In 1886, Marines from Hawaii donated two canoes with flags attached to each as well as baskets filled with food for Marines stationed on Iwo Jima. In 1951, Marines from Japan gifted four rifles to Marine Barracks at Quantico. In 1957, marines from Korea gifted two pistols and one rifle to Marine Barracks at Quantico. In 1978, marines from Spain gifted three rifles and a sashimi dinner to Marine Barracks at Quantico. Since 1992, marines have been donating carriages made out of cedar boards or plastic that are decorated with artwork or photos taken by marine units during deployments around the world. These carriages are sent back home with Family Reunions where family members take turns riding in the carriage while discussing military life overseas with their marine relatives who served alongside them during their time in service (or currently serve). There are now many different ways that marines send gifts back home including sending individual items like cars or clothing along with postcards which often include pictures of unit members relaxing inside their barracks while they await their next deployment abroad or taking part in various activities outside of barracks such as compete pistol shooting events or swimming meets/athletics workouts etc.. There is no doubt that gifting has become an important aspect of military culture which keeps servicemen and women connected not only between deployments but also once they come home!
