The history of the Texas National Guard began in 1836. The Texans were already fighting for their independence from Mexico, and they needed help to defend themselves. The Texas National Guard was created on October 29, 1836, by General Sam Houston as a way to provide backup for the Texan military. The first national guard unit was called the 1st Battalion of Rangers. It was made up of volunteers from different parts of Texas. The unit served in various missions until it disbanded in 1840. In 1850, the 2nd Battalion of Rangers was organized and served under Governor Pat Robertson during the Killeen Massacre. After that, the battalion became known as the “Texas Rangers” and fought in various battles throughout central Texas until it disbanded in 1857. After disbanding, many members formed new units and helped fight against Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1865, two battalions were again organized: one called “The Lone Star Ranger” and another called “The Texan Order”. Both battalions served under General John Buford during his assault on San Antonio de Bexar (April 14-May 3, 1865). In 1903, a new battalion was created named after President Theodore Roosevelt: The United States Olympic Athlete Battalion (USOA). Throughout its history, USOA has been an important part of American culture by providing athletes with training and competition opportunities at home and abroad. Since its inception however, USOA has had several controversies surrounding it such as sponsorship deals with tobacco companies and other controversial issues like recruiting Native Americans into service without their consent or protesting against World War I atrocities committed by European armies on Indigenous people living east of America.

The National Guard has been around since the Revolutionary War. In fact, the first organized militia in the colonies were ordered by General George Washington to guarding Philadelphia during the Convention of 1787. The Militia Act of 1792 defined and authorized the creation of a national guard system in America. In 1861, when Lincoln was elected president, he called for 1 million men to be mustered into service as soldiers in order to help fight for his new government. This call set off a chain reaction that led to the American Civil War. The National Guard had originally only been created for military purposes, but soon began providing support to other government agencies such as law enforcement and firefighting. Over time, the National Guard also became known for its patriotic and ceremonial functions such as parades and concerts. One of the most famous national guard gifts is an antimissile defense system designed by Henry Mikesell which was donated to America by Great Britain in 1951. This system is now used by both America and UK troops stationed in Afghanistan. Another popular national guard gift is a rifle or shotgun that can be personalized with a soldier’s name or photograph.
