Killeen is a city in Texas, United States. The population was 21,853 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Johnson County. Killeen was founded on December 12, 1879 by John Hance and his wife Nancy as a small town on the banks of the Trinity River. Killeen, Texas is a small town located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 9,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area and is the county seat of Hays County. The town was founded by pioneers in 1836 as an unincorporated community on the banks of the Trinity River. A post office was established there in 1838, and by 1846 it had grown to include a full town center with a hotel and two churches. In 1865, Killeen became one of several towns consolidated into Austin while it was still under Mexican rule. Austin annexed Killeen in 1876, making it an integral part of its city limits. Today, Killeen remains a small town with close historic ties to both Austin and Hays County. The downtown blocks contain many local businesses and restaurants, as well as cultural attractions like the Killeen Museum of Art and Stagecoach Theatre Complex—both popular tourist destinations for visitors from surrounding counties during summertime).
