A small community of farmers and ranchers near what is now downtown Killeen began to grow coffee beans and sell them fresh from the farm. In 1848, John Hogg founded a grocery store in what is now downtown Killeen and decided to start selling coffee. The first coffee shop in town was opened by Mr. Hogg on Missouri Street just east of North Lamar Boulevard. The shop sold coffee for 3¢ per cup until 1862 when it moved to its current location on South Lamar Boulevard. In 1898, The Haskell Coffee Company was founded in Killeen and soon became one of the largest roasters in Texas. In 1925, Jack Daniels opened his first restaurant in Killeen and started serving up some of the world's first commercial espresso drinks. The popularity of espresso led to other restaurants starting to offer their own versions of espresso beverages such as cappuccino or latte macchiato. In 1954, Howard Schultz opened his first Starbucks location in downtown Killeen which quickly became a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike to enjoy a originated cup of joe while they shopped or dined downtown.

Killeen, Texas is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,693 at the 2010 census. It was named after General Sam Houston. Killeen is located on the Texan/Mexico border and lies just east of San Antonio, between the two cities' city limits. According to the 2010 census, Killeen has a total area of , of which is land and (0.8%) is water. The town was founded by Anglo-American settlers in 1871 as part of the then newly organized county of Midland. By 1881 it had become an agricultural center with cotton plantations and cattle ranches run by Anglo-Americans and their Mexican workers. In 1886, a post office was established at Killeen with John Fenton as firstpostmaster; it continued in operation until 1907. The town's name originated from General Sam Houston's remark that "the place called Killeen [sic] would be worth more than any other spot on earth." In 1912–13, during World War I, Killeen became one of several towns within Midland County to become wartime production centers for munitions manufacturing under Project Paperclip; this phase of American military occupation yielded many American technical innovations during World War II such as radar technology developed at Bell Labs in early 1942 at nearby San Antonio Airport by Colonel Leslie Groves – used throughout Nazi Germany during the war period - as well as German scientists who worked on V-2 rocketry research starting in 1945 before finally being abandoned following Allied victory over Axis forces on May 61945 ending World War II in Europe
The Killeen, Texas community began as a small settlement in 1879 on the banks of the Brazos River. The town was named after James Killeen, an early settler and landowner. In 1902, the name was changed to Killeen Station to honor James Fenton, one of the first white farmers in the area. The station served as a stop on the Houston and Dallas Railroad. In 1907, Killeen Station was destroyed by a fire that burned for days. The town continued to grow until it had a population of around 1,500 people in 1920. After World War II, many local businesses closed due to scarce available labor or new technologies. However, some residents remained active in town politics and business until c1970 when all but two of the original buildings were demolished in what is now known as "The Great Fire."
