The history of the Army in Kyle, Texas can be traced back to the early 1800s. The first soldier to settle in this area was Captain James H. Bowie, who arrived on horseback in 1827. He built a log cabin near present day Kyle and named it Fort Bowie. In 1830, General James K. Polk sent a force of Texans under Colonel John Biddle to attack and burn Fort Bowie. The Texan forces were successful in burning down the fort, but they were not able to capture or kill Captain Bowie, who escaped into Mexico. In 1836, Major General Andrew Johnson ordered the 1st Battalion of Texas Rangers to establish a military post at Kyle for security purposes during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). The Rangers garrisonedKyle until 1851 when they moved out and replaced by the 8th Regiment of Infantry (United States) under Colonel Robert Ewing Smith. In 1861, Confederate soldiers burned down buildings at Fort Bowie while occupying the town; this event is considered to be the beginning of Kyle's civilian population growth. In 1871 Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Fenton organized an infantry battalion called 4th Regiment United States Infantry with headquarters at Kyle and four battalions stationed along Brownsville Rd., east of town center; these units served as perimeter defense for Houston during Reconstruction after Texas seceded from the Union in 1865. Following World War II, there was a large influx of refugees from Japan and China living in rural areas throughout Southeastern Texas due to wartime relocation policies put into place by President Franklin D. Roosevelt following World War II . Many Japanese Americans worked as farmers or construction workers throughout Southeast Texas during this time period; these people are sometimes referred to as "Army brides." Kyle, Texas is a small town in theMidwestern United States. The population was 3,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name comes from John Kyle and Jesse Hill's ill-fated wagon ride through the region in 1876. The first permanent settler in what became Kyle was James Hogg on August 10, 1872. He erected a cabin near present day OldKyle Cemetery and named it "Hogg's Grove". A post office called Kyle was established in 1875, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1907, a group of businessmen led by J.D. Maloney founded Ambrosia Café & Restaurant which would become one of the most popular restaurants inKyle for many years to come. In 1942, Ambrosia relocated to its current location on Elm Street just south of Main Street. An oil well was discovered at Red Hill Basin east of town on November 12, 1927 which spurred development around the well site with townsfolk erecting houses around it such as White Sands and Pecan Hills . In 1935 an annex was added to Kyle to house Springtown Independent School District (later Springtown High School). A large farm complex known as Rice Lake Farms began operations northeast of town off Highway 290 about 1966 when farmers decided to sell their land surrounding Rice Lake dam for development purposes; this complex currently includes over 100 homes including some that are still used as residences today For many years health care services were provided by private physicians who resided outside of town while local residents filled in for absent medical personnel; however this arrangement ended after state reimbursement eliminated private physician services statewide in 2003 . On July 1, 1957 ,Kyle annexation replaced Springtown ISD annexation . This event marked a watershed moment as both towns consolidated under one roof,, although there have been occasional breaks between them since then due primarily to differences over taxation and school issues
