The first settlers of Kyle were Englishmen who came to what is now Midland County in 1836. They named their land Kyle after Captain James Kyle who had explored the area during the early 1830s. The first post office at Kyle was established in 1839. When America entered World War II, many citizens volunteered to serve as soldiers because they felt that it would be a good way to help country suffer while they fought overseas. Many of these citizens also became veterans and are still living in Kyle today. Kyle, Texas is a small town located in Webb County, southwestern Texas. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded by Alex Kyle in 1872 as a small trading post on the banks of the Colorado River. In 1902, it became a community when the railroad arrived and pushed settlers out of other nearby towns. The first school opened in 1905 and the first post office opened in 1907. In 1912, local ranchers formed a cattle drive to find new grazing grounds for their livestock and discovered an oil well near Kyle. Soon after, oil began to flow from the well and people began arriving to set up businesses around it. Kyle grew rapidly during World War I as battle-hardened soldiers brought food and supplies to troops stationed here; then came women who turned out to be key players in Main Street’s early days: First ladies Eva Jarrell (1915-2002) and Lucy Boggs Calvert (1920-2006).
