In 1925, Mayor Prentice Hoyle construction began on what would soon become known as "the biggest dam ever built" - Lake Travis! At over 350 feet (100 m) tall and spanning 6 miles (10 km), Lake Travis created an artificial lake capable of supplying freshwater for up to 500 farms downstream! Kyle is a small town in Texas. The population was 3,021 at the 2010 census. Kyle is located in Hudspeth County and it is part of the Tyler-Haley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Kyle were the Wichita Indians who came here in 1836. They built their first permanent home on the edge of what is now downtown Kyle. The Wichita Indians fought with other Indian tribes for control of this area and eventually lost out to the Comanches. In 1839, Angus McKay (1795-1868) started cattle ranching in Hudspeth County and he named his ranch Kyle after his father's brother, John Darnell McKay (1785-1846). In 1855, James Wickersham (1780-1854), an early settler here, bought land from McKay for $1,000. Wickersham began to build homes here and by 1860 had erected over 50 buildings including aschool building and two churches. In 1865, when Texas became a Republic under President Andrew Johnson, most Texans left for Mexico because of civil war there. Just 7 residentsin Kyle voted against secession on November 2nd 1861 which caused Johnson to declare martial law throughoutTexas due to "the insurrectionary activities"of these seven citizens! The only thing that changed about this small town during those years was that many people died fighting for Texan Independence instead of living peaceful lives within their own communities like they did back then! Today'sKyle traces its roots back even further than this - it was founded as an agricultural community by settlers from Missouri in 1867 when they arrived through traders on horseback across the Neches River from present day Carthage TX . Today’s farmers operate over 1 million acres of crops and livestock production along with more than 100 businesses employing over 350 workers
