Coffee has been enjoyed by many people for over a hundred years. The first coffee beans were roasted in the town of Taos, New Mexico in 1847. The beans were brought to La Marque, Texas by an Italian American named Giovanni da Ponte. Mr. Da Ponte started the first café in La Marque in 1892 and named it "The Dutchman's Coffee House". In 1924, the café was renamed "The Star-Up Coffee House" and then finally, "La Marque Coffee Shop". The business continued to be run by Da Ponte's descendants until it was sold to Harry Smith in 1984. In 1990, Harry Smith decided to close the shop after more than 40 years of operation. However, due to its popularity and long history, La Marque Coffee Shop continues to be one of the most popular businesses in LaMarque. The store has been open each day since September 1990 and is still going strong today!

La Marque is a small town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 703 at the 2010 census. La Marque is part of the Amarillo–Bryan Metropolitan Statistical Area. La Marque is located on the banks of the Arkansas River and includes four blocks of downtown. The first permanent settler in what is now La Marque was J.F. Smith who built a log cabin in 1836. Many people from Gregg County migrated to Amarillo during the late 1800s due to railroad construction and other opportunities in that area. After World War II, many farmers moved away from humid West Texas for drier climates in North America. In 1957, businessman Harry Hecht donated land to build a shopping mall which became known as Hecht's Mall today. The original plaza included three restaurants, two gas stations and one movie theater. A new wing was added in 1984 which included an outdoor amphitheater and several shops including T-Mobile, Sears (now Kmart), JCPenney and Marshall's Sporting Goods stores before being taken down for rebranding as Wetlands Park later that year with plans for it to become an open-air museum featuring natural history exhibits until it closed again by 1992 due to budget cuts caused by deregulation of the American economy following the Gulf War embargo). In its heyday, La Marque had over 100 businesses selling products from local farm to customer all within walking distance of each other making it one of the most vibrant small towns east of Wichita Falls or Austin TX

The town grew rapidly due to its status as a rail center and its location on the Texas Central Railway. By 1907, La Marque had become a ghost town, due to the economic decline of the area. However, the town's history is still remembered today through its namesake restaurant and local businesses.
