The Texas Marine Museum in La Marque, Texas has a rich marine gift history. The museum was founded in 1922 and specializes in maritime history and artifacts from the Gulf of Mexico and the Texas Coast. One of the earliest gifts to the museum was a saltbox shipwreck, which was donated by Captain Harry Greeley. The museum also acquired a submarine from Clearwater Naval Shipyard in 1967. In 1980, the museum acquired a Japanese battleship Yamato from Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force. The USS Constitution Museum in Philadelphia accepted the Yamato as part of their collection of World War II ships. In 1984, the museums partnered to purchase a Dutch sailing ship, De Ruyter, which had been sunk off Louisiana after being bombed during WWII. The De Ruyter served as an exhibit at both institutions for many years before it was finally donated to theTexas Marine Museum in La Marque, TX in 2006. The museum also collected items related to maritime history during Hurricane Ike in 2008. They were able to salvage many items from storm damage including several cannons and anchors that had been lost during Ike’s landfall onshore near Galveston Island.

La Marque is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. It was founded by Anglo-American settlers in the early 1800s and grew up around a cattle ranch. La Marque has a population of about 1,100 people as of 2010. The primary industry in La Marque is agriculture, with crops such as cotton and corn being grown. The first white settler to arrive in Hudspeth County was David Hogg in 1836. He began farming land adjacent to the Rancho San Antonio de la Frontera which he acquired from Manuel Armijo y Costilla. In 1839, Alexander McMillin arrived from Illinois with his family and built a cabin near what is now La Marque on the North Fork of the Brazos River. In 1840, John Atherton settled at an unspecified location near present-day LaMarque after purchasing 640 acres (2 km²) of land from José Cámpora for $10 per acre ($336 total). In 1845, John Lennon bought 120 acres (4 km²) of land east of present-day LaMarque from José Gomez for $5 per acre ($120 total). The site became known as Lennon's Ranch because it served as his home and grazing ground during the early years of his music career. In 1850, Wm., Jno., Sr., heirs to Jameson & Co.'s Texas Tobacco company purchased an additional 160 acres (6 km²) northwest of present-day LaMarque from Alonso Ortiz for $5 per acre ($160 total). This acquisition created what is today known as Lennon's Rancheros National Monument/National Historical Park. In 1861, Jesse Taylor purchased 624 acres (2 km²) west of present-day La Marque from Domingo García for $30 per acre ($640 total). This purchase gave rise to Taylor's Prairie View A&M University which now occupies much of that original property along with 5 miles (8 km²) of road extending into neighboring Polk County. By 1870, about one-third or allof the current population had relocated to modern day Hudspeth County when Henry Clements platted Hyde Park Township on October 21st 1880 unincorporated territory comprising partof Austin Heights Subdivision #1 * & #2 * within Austin Township #1 * & #2 * within Travis County [see map above]. La Marque is a town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from Spanish la marca meaning "mark" or "brand." La Marque was founded in 1872 by John Smedley and his brother-in-law A.P. Hill as a trading post on the Sam Houston Trail. It became a small community with only about eighty people when it served as an army supply depot during World War I and again during World War II.
