They bought 125 acres of land east of present-day McAllen from General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna for $2 million dollars. The family then began developing the land into what is now known as Henderson Ranch State Park. In 1893, they donated an acreage west of their farm to create University Park which became one of the most important educational institutions in south Texas during the early 20th century.
