Military gift history in Lake Jackson, Texas can be traced back to the early 1800s when General Sam Houston was wounded during the Mexican-American War. The General's wife, Anna Maria Hill, decided to give her husband a new army sword as a symbol of her support. She ordered the sword from Herringbone Forge in Portsmouth, England and it arrived at San Antonio in 1821. A few years later, General Houston's widow donated an additional 3 swords to the military for use by officers. In 1827, Major James Fenton of the 5th Regiment Texas Volunteers gave Captain John Cushing his first sword as a token of appreciation for his heroism during the Battle of Bexar Heights. In 1845, Commodore John Tatum purchased land in what is now Lake Jackson from J.B. White and organized a company called "The Rangers" with local men to protect against Indian raids on their plantation holdings around town. The Rangers served until 1898 when they were disbanded due to budget cuts within the US Army Signal Corps. In 1915-16, Captain James Underwood of Company G (5th Texas Infantry) served with distinction as Commanding Officer of Company H (5th Texas Infantry) during World War I and was recognized by President Woodrow Wilson with a Presidential Unit Citation (PUC). After World War I ended, Captain Underwood became Commandant of Company G and Headmaster at Confederate Memorial School located at 4100 block FM 825 in Lake Jackson where he retired in 1934 after service lasting more than 50 years including 43 years as Headmaster! Today there are two companies active within the United States Marine Corps: Companies F and M which serve out floats or land areas behind Marine Barracks on IH 35 just outside town limits; both Companies have been here since 1924! Every February since 1985 there has been held at Marine Barracks an Annual Reunion Luncheon function honoring members who have passed away since then - many over 100 years old! As you walk through town today you will see several flags flying high above all that represent military service past and present - most notably Air Force One!!

The area that now includes Lake Jackson was named after Don Antonio de la Vega, a captain of a Spanish vessel that sighted the lake while on a voyage from Mexico to Texas. La Vega claimed the area for Spain and named it Santiago. In 1795, Captain James Cook explored the mouth of the river Louisiana and reported finding "a small body of water in this bay which I supposed to be Quahog." The name "Lake Jackson" was given to the body of water by General Sam Houston as part of his victory over Mexican forces at San Jacinto.
