Airforce gift history in Lakeway, Texas began in the 1940s when World War II veterans brought their families and friends to the town for a summer getaway. The air force would leave gifts for everyone on board during their stay- including army and navy personnel, who would often bring back items from overseas. The town quickly became known as "The Gift of the Gulf" for its wide selection of patriotic memorabilia and local air force slang terms such as "the bases." In 1993, the Lakeway Chamber of Commerce bought an abandoned military hangar that had been used by the air force since the 1940s. They restoration project included creating a new museum annex with displays about local WWII heroism and Air Force culture. In 2006, they opened an exhibit called "From Fighter to Bomber: The History of Air Force Gifts in Lakeway." This exhibit tells the story of how local residents have donated items to our military over time. It also features photos and artifacts from throughout history relating to gifts given to our military by locals. Today, locals continue to give back to our military with donations both big and small. From buying large quantities of gear at auctions or garage sales, to small contributions like leaving a bowl of cereal out at work or giving away 100 pounds of coal, these kind gestures show just how much we care about what happens in behalf of our country.

Lakeway is a city in the US state of Texas. The population was 2,044 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. Lakeway is located on the eastern edge of Hudspeth County and is bordered by Austin to the north, Houston to the east, and Grimes County to the south. The city's origins can be traced back to 1896 when mining began in what would become known as “thevil” area. Prior to that time, there was only one small settlement in this vicinity, which was called Springdale. A post office was established at Springdale in 1896 and remained in operation until 1907. In 1912, a rail junction was built south of town and namedlakeway after then- Mayor John Pemberton’s rancho, which lay just outside of town limits (now part of Loop 610). In 1925, construction started on a new airport west of town and it became operational in 1927 under name Lakeway Airport. At its peak during World War II it served as an air transport hub for war efforts across South Texas; however due to sensitive military airspace over Hudspeth County it closed down following hostilities ended in 1945. Lakeway is a city in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.
The first white person to live in what would become Lakeway was Mr. and Mrs. Fenton who arrived from Illinois in 1876. In 1912, Hilda Aikens came to live with her parents and began growing crops on their farmstead which later became known as Aiken's Prairie. She married Dr. William Tatum on September 8th of that year and they started a family in 1913. By 1922 their farm had been bought by George Waggoner who made it his home until his death in 1928.
The city was founded on July 3rd, 1914 when Jock Lindsey purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) east of town from the Farmers National Bank. On December 12th of that year he christened the new city Lakeway after himself and donated all of the land for its incorporation. The City Council approved the plat on February 20th, 1915 which included a road to be built north from town center so people could get to work during those early years
In 1916 an election was held for Mayor and two council members were elected with one member coming from each party to serve three year terms; James Denny ran unopposed for Mayoralty but lost to Tom Hardwick who had run as an independent candidate. After World War I things changed for Lakeway when oil discoveries began flowing through nearby Webb County; businesses sprang up around town providing much needed revenue
An agreement was reached between companies involved with oil production and respective landowners whereby all property within a certain radius were divided evenly among those companies; this led to development around town including many residential areas now known as "The Loop" or Downtown lakeway
