However, as time passed, more and more expensive coffee bean varieties were developed and brought to market. Today, many people enjoy a cup of gourmet coffee at home because of its unique flavor and high quality. The earliest record of coffee growing in this area is from 1853. The first recorded beans were grown on the banks of the Trinity River near present day Sulphur Springs. By 1870, coffee had spread to neighboring counties including Medina, Jim Wells and Robertson County. In 1875, Waco became the first city in Texas to import coffee from Europe. This event marked an important turning point for Austin as it became one of the leading commercial centers for both retail sales and international trade within Texas during this time period. During this time period, gourmet coffee was typically sold roasted or ground with a variety of added flavors including cinnamon sugar (now known as syrups), chocolate milk (now known as hot cocoa) and vanilla extract (now known as whipped cream). Some customers also preferred whole beans over processed versions such as those found at convenience stores today. Because peppermint oil was not available then, some people would add peppermint extract to their cups for extra flavor - an innovation that continues today! Cup popularity began to grow before World War II when motorists started taking notice of all those shiny new cafes popping up all over town – they started calling them "coffee shops". After the war ended however, things slowed down until the late 1970s when Austin resumed its growth spurt which led to even more new cafes opening up throughout town center areas like Northlake Mall etc.). Lakeway was founded in 1875 by James Fenton. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and, by 1899, it had a population of 1,500. In 1915, the Texas Railroad Company built a line from Lubbock to Lakeway. The townspeople soon realized that the railroad would be their best hope for economic development. They campaign avidly for the construction of a connection between Lakeway and Lubbock. In 1928, the first train arrived in Lakeway and the community quickly began to grow. By 1933, there were over 2,000 residents in Lakeway.The town's growth slowed during World War II because of the large number of soldiers stationed in Lubbock at that time. However, after the war ended, business picked up again and enrollment at Lakeway increased to 5200 by 1949. In 1961, when Interstate 15 was completed bypassing downtown Lubbock and starting downriver towards Amarillo, much attention was given to developing Highway 15 into an express highway connecting all of Texas' major cities. As a result of this attention, businesses within walking distance of I-15 began to thrive and prices for land around Lakeside skyrocketed. Today (2016), Lakeside is still one ofLakeside's most vibrant communities with close proximity to both local businesses as well as shopping opportunities outside its boundaries
Lakeway was first settled in 1836 by the families of Englishman John and Jane Fenton. The town was named after the forks of the Trinity River, which led to its name. In 1845, a post office was founded at Lakeway, and in 1851, a depot was built for the Texas Central Railroad. The town declined during the 19th century due to lack of population and development around it. However, in 1870, a cotton plantation called White Sands was established in what is now downtown Lakeway. After several years of growth, White Sands became too large for the town and it abandoned its existence in 1875.
