Lakeway is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settlers to the area were Mexican workers who came from Zacatecas during the 1846-1848 Mexican War. They built a log cabin on what is now North First Street in 1851 and named it "Lakeway." A post office was established at Lakeway in 1854, and the town took its current name from nearby Lake Texoma. In 1870, a group of Dutch farmers settled near what is now South First Street and Westlake Avenue in Lakeway. They called their land "Nieuwdorp" (New Town). In 1897, they sold their land to John Mechelin for $8 per acre ($ today). Mechelin founded Rio Grande Western Railroad here as well as two other towns: South Allendale and East Nacoochee Creek. The towns mushroomed around him; by 1910 there were over 100 people living there. Mechelin died in 1928 and his company went bankrupt shortly thereafter. Rio Grande Western bought his company's assets back from bankruptcy court for $120 million dollars ($ today). Here again, the towns exploded; by 1930 there were 1,500 people living here total with an additional 2,000 people coming each year since World War II until that point. Mechelin Boulevard runs through downtown Lakeway with many stores including Wal-Mart and Dillons along its length selling food items such as gasoline service stations as well as home improvement supplies like windows screens and door locksmith services

Lakeway is a city in Williamson County, Texas, United States. It was founded on the banks of the Brazos River in 1871 and named for General James Lamar Lake. The population was 7,477 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Lakeway was founded by General James Lamar Lake on December 1, 1871 in what is now Williamson County. The town was located along the Brazos River and rapidly developed due to its location and1 easy access to water resources. By 1870, there were over 100 residents living in Lakeway. In 1881, General Lamar donated land to build a school and library which became one of the first public schools in Williamson County. In 1898, Lakeway built its first courthouse which still stands today. In 1911, Lakeway merged with neighboring towns Blooming Grove and Lubbock to form a new city called Lakeway Heights which had a population of 14,000 people at its peak. The merger created an important transportation link between Austin and Round Rock since it allowed for easy movement across county lines for goods and services offered by both cities. In 1928, Lakeway Heights annexed much of neighbouring Floresville making it one of the largest annexations ever made in Williamson County history . The 1930s were difficult for local businesses due to World War II rationing but business growth resumed after 1946 when oil production increased statewide following World War II developments such as Encino Ranchoarental drilling rigs being stationed along Interstate 10 near Rosenberg . In 1955-1956 an arms race began between Dallas/Fort Worth companies vying for control over pipeline rights leading to several major accidents including an derailment that killed five workers at Texaco Refinery just outside town limits on July 3rd 1956 followed by another accident two days later when two pipelines carrying gasoline derailed near Marfa killing eleven people This led to increased tensions betweenDallas/Fort Worth companies vying for control over pipeline rights with local businesses struggling against larger rivals seeking more profits from energy exploration techniques that had become common during this time
Lakeway was founded in 1836 by Captain James F. Cooke and his wife, Sarah A. Cooke. The first post office was established at Lakeway in 1839. In 1870, the town of Lakeway became a county seat with the creation of Texas County. The county courthouse was located in the current day city of Richardson until it was moved to its present location in 1907.
