The Lancaster, Texas Army National Guard has been deployable since 1941. The unit is composed of reservists and active duty members who are mobilized to serve in times of peace or war. In 1941, the Lancaster National Guard was activated as an infantry regiment and stationed at Fort Bliss. Lancaster, Texas is a small city in the border of Texas and Mexico. It is located in Hidalgo County, about 25 miles southeast of downtown Mexico City. The population was 2,702 at the 2010 census. Lancaster was founded in 1874 by English settlers who abandoned their farmstead on the east bank of the Brazos River for what would eventually become present-day Lancaster. The town's name comes from a skirmish fought between American forces and Mexican insurgents near Lancaster in November 1846. A Mexican bandit named Francisco de la Vega claimed responsibility for this fight and called himself "the Mayor of Lancaster." After the battle, American General George Armstrong Custer captured Francisco de la Vega and took him to Fort Worth as a prisoner. In 1861, when Texas seceded from the Union, Lancaster became part of Mexican territory. However, due to its strategic location within Confederate artillery range during the American Civil War, it remained an important center of trade until 1865 when it was annexed by United States Provisional Government troops under Lieutenant Colonel James J. Fenton (later General James Fenton). In 1865, US troops burned down much of Lancaster's old brick courthouse before retreating southward through what is now East Dallas into Mexico City after concluding their campaign against Confederate forces there. The building still stands standing as a reminder of how one community could be so successfully adaptive to changing times and cultures while remaining essentially unchanged over time
