Lancaster, Texas is a small town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,087 at the 2000 census. It was founded by Lancaster colonists in 1881. The town is located on the banks of the Trinity River and it is named for Lancaster, England. The first store in Lancaster opened in 1881. The community grew rapidly after incorporation in 1902 and by 1912 had a population of 1,500 people. In 1916 the town became an independent municipality and retained its name until 1955 when it changed to Lancaster County. Lancaster has been known for its cotton plantations since before the American Civil War and during Reconstruction period; many of these were acquired by Cimarron Consolidated Cotton Company (now part of Monsanto). In 1904–1905Cimarron merged with another cotton company, Gulf & Western Railway Company (G&W), to form Gulf Oil Corporation; this company operated many mills including one near Lancaster that produced cotton thread for sewing goods such as curtains and floor mats. In 1933 Gulf Oil Corporation merged with Texaco to become Texaco Energy Corporation; this company operated many more mills including one near Lancaster that produced gasoline for transportation purposes as well as oil products such as asphalt and kerosene. In 1984 Texaco divested itself of its petroleum businesses and renamed itself Occidental Petroleum Corporation which continued operating several other mills until 1998 when it purchased PennEast Pipeline Partners LLC from ConocoPhillips plc.; Occidental then retired all but two of its remaining mills which continue to produce commodities like flour, cornmeal, soybean meal and lumber while also continuing operations at the two oldest plants - one producing gasoline until 2006 and one producing asphalt until 2009 - both now closed down. In recent years there has been much development taking place within the bounds of Lancaster County - notably within the city limits of Irving however much progress has still been made outside those boundaries too: numerous new shopping malls have opened up within easy driving distance since 2007-2008 alone making it easier for residents to get around without having to leave their homes; larger developments have also begun popping up all over central Cameron County throughout recent years making life much more affordable inside than it used to be outside those boundaries despite some challenges along the way (such as increased crime rates); some developers are even looking into developing what would once have been agricultural land into residential neighborhoods complete with pools/spas/golf courses etc., justifying yet again why so few people live within "the heart" of Lancasters rural core anymore
