Lancaster, Texas is a small town in southeastern Texas that was founded in 1853. Lancaster has a population of approximately 10,000 people and is the most populous city in Hidalgo County. The city is the county seat for Hidalgo County and is also served by the Lancaster Independent School District. Lancaster was named after Captain James Lancaster who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first settlers to what is now Lancaster were farmers who arrived from eastern Pennsylvania in 1848.
