Laredo is located on the banks of the Nueces River and borders Reynosa to the east and Monterrey to the north. The name "Laredo" comes from "La Rueda" (the track), meaning "the saddle," because early Spanish settlers rode their horses downriver to trade with Indians. The first Europeans who discovered this area were Hidalgo captains Antonio de la Garza and José de Escobar in 1736. Laredo became a United States territory on March 14, 1846 when Mexico ceded it to America as part of that country's Tejas acquisition of all of New Mexico Territory. After failing to bring reinforcements against numerically superior force led by Ulysses S Grant4 , Fraga ordered his men into retreat leaving many women and children behind5 ; they were eventually able to return home safely but suffered great losses5 .
