The Coast Guard gift history in League City, Texas began with the founding of the League City Fire Department on November 12, 1892. The first Chief of Police was George A. White and the department was organized into a brigade system. Captain J.B. Hickey became captain on July 1, 1893 and served until his retirement on June 30, 1895. Captain Hickey’s successor was Captain Wm. Fenton who served for six years before being promoted to lieutenant colonel on January 1, 1902. He remained in that position until his retirement on December 31, 1912; Lieutenant Colonel Fountain was succeeded by First Lieutenant Charles Copley who served for eight years before becoming captain in 1916; and Second Lieutenant John Latham who served for two years before becoming assistant chief (1922-24). In 1926 First Lieutenant Latham became acting chief when Captain Noble resigned because of health reasons. In 1928 Assistant Chief Harry Fenton took over as Acting Chief until he was promoted to Chief effective October 1, 1929 upon Noble’s return from a trip to Europe where he had been stationed as commanding officer at Gibraltar Airfield since 1922. At this time the new Commandantcy Building (now known as Captains Quarters) replaced the old barracks on Commerce Street which were torn down in 1906 due to fire damage done by a lightning strike while under construction next door! Assistant Chiefs continued to serve as acting chiefs untilEffective May 15th 1934 when First Lt Raymond Lea took over command from Lt Col Harry Fenton hours after he had been recommended by then-Captains James Banes and Willis Hayslett Jr.. On May 17th 1933 First Lt Ray Lea assumed command of Division Five Headquarters located at 1602 Main Street which included District Headquarters at 1700 Main Street also known as “The Heights” within East Austin Municipal Airport located east of Interstate 10 just south of IH10 exit 24! After serving two terms as Division 5 Commander and one term as Mayor of League Cityattacks against Navy shipyards increased during World War II so it was decided on September 9th 1942 that District Headquarters would move from The Heights to 701 San Antonio Road adjacent to Barker Army Air Field pending completion of new facilities there! Plans for building these new headquarters were delayed due to World War II hostilities but finally initiated effective October 25th 1945 when all Coast Guard stations closed along with most naval shipyards! On November 6th 1946 Deputy Director Manuel Martinez relocated District Headquarters from 701 San Antonio Road back to The Heights following its reopening days later although it reverted back againto District Headquarters status only one year later when operational commands moved back ashore!! This change may have been caused by an article published in the Dallas News dated February 3rd 1948 entitled “Mission accomplished: Coast Guards open their station again” which announced that “the present location has proved too small…an addition is needed near downtown Houston where more people can easily be reached”!!! The City of League City, Texas was founded in 1879 by J.D. Morgan and other entrepreneurs. The city became a center for oil and gas exploration and production during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. During the 1970s and 1980s, League City experienced significant economic growth as a result of its petroleum industry activities. In recent years, however, League City's economy has been weakened by several factors including declining oil prices and correctional officer retirements. The history of League City began with Jardine Weller coming to Texas in 1879 looking for new land to explore for oil reserves. He purchased 425 acres southeast of present-day League City from John Cavanaugh under the name "Jardine Weller & Company." Initial efforts were made to drill wells but no results were achieved until 1881 when Morgan acquired control of the company from Weller at what would become known as "Morgan Wells." Witheerding help from his friend William Tatum (a railroad magnate), Morgan developed various methods of extracting petroleum products from shale formations near Clear Lake beneath present-day Uniontown; these techniques included horizontal drilling into Mississippian sandstone reservoirs which yielded large amounts of bituminous coal Dakota Oil Company) later became known as "the first successful commercial exploitation in North America." After acquiring additional land along Railroad Street between Highway 6W and Highway 7W he renamed his company "League Corporation" on September 1, 1883 after Houston philanthropist Jameson Hogg (of Hogg Coal & Coke) offered him $10,-000 () to purchase 500 acres northeastward along Railroad Street between Interstate 45th Street NWand Interstate 610THirty years later Uniontown assessed property values at over $200,-000 (), making it one of the most valuable towns within twenty miles (). In 1907 he sold all his interests in "League Corporation" excepting some rights to produce gasoline on his remaining properties eastward along Railroad Street; this property would become known today as Midland Refinery #1 (). In 1913 he sold all his lands eastward along Railroad Street again (), creating Midland Refinery #2 (). Today both refineries are owned by Sumitomo Chemical Holdings Co., Ltd.; both operate under Contract No.: DS9031
