The name "League City" comes from two different places: one was near The League Club on Houston Street and another was at Railroad station Road (now Loop 1604). The first incarnation of what would become League City grew up around two businesses - J & W Bicycles and H-E-B - which were founded by businessmen John Hennessey and Harry Elliott respectively in 1925. In 1927, when both businesses closed their doors for good due to hard times, their employees pooled their money together to open the first real game store - J&W Sports Store - in League City's current location on Polk Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. In 1960, after more than 50 years of growth within Williamson County – with business expansions including oil refineries – League City proper finally attained its own incorporated government when it became an unincorporated community under Chapter 2118 of the county charter dated July 30th, 1960 named for A C Whaley Sr., a banker and civic leader who had contributed greatly to local development over many years before that date. At that time there were only 10 families living inside what would eventually become League City limits; today’s population stands at 85 thousand residents spread across 1 square mile within an urban/rural continuum spanning 5 miles north to south along IH-10 east to west!
