At that time there were just 10 residents in Leander and only 2 businesses! Since then UPenn has sent students and faculty all over Texas for research opportunities atvarious universities: Austin (1978), Dallas (1979), San Antonio (1980), Lubbock (1981), New Braunfels (1982) etcetera! UPenn also established an exchange program with Monterrey during their “Aztecweek” which included visits by professors from Monterrey University’s School of Veterinary Medicine as well as medical students from UT Health Sciences Center – San Francisco who did investigative work on avian diseases carried by Mexican camels during their travels through Central America! Leander has seen more deployments than any other community in our state due to our strong international ties both militarily and academically! We are especially proud of our Military Club which offers functions year-round for civilians and Soldiers alike!

Leander is a town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,522 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Texarkana, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Leander was John J. Fegley who arrived on July 3rd, 1881. He and his family were the first to live in what is now Leander when it was still a part of Pecos County. A post office called Fegley had been established in 1881, but was discontinued due to lack of customers. In 1886 the name of the town changed from Fegley to Leander after Major General James Longstreet's victory at Montero Bridge over the Brazos River. On December 25th, 1907 an oil well was drilled by Johnnie Waddell and partners near present day Centerbrook Drive and FM 571 (now US-281). This well became known as Waddell Well No. 2 because it produced more oil than any other wells until that time located within Gregg County or anywhere else within Texas for that matter! The original town hall building still stands today just off centerbrook drive next to where Waddell Well No. 2 once stood! The population of Leander began growing rapidly after this discovery and soon there were businesses popping up all throughout town including a bank, grocery store, clothing store and many more! By 1930 there were over 100 people living in Leander with most working in nearby towns such as Amarillo or Texarkana! During World War II much of what is now downtown Leander came into use as military barracks for local soldiers stationed along I-10 specifically east of Walnut Street between Elm Street and Broadway! During these years Main Street ran parallel to I-10 which made for some interesting traffic times during peak hours!!! Lutheran church also played a big role during this time with services being held both inside and outside their building on various days during evensong!!

On May 1, 1936, Mayor Elmer Ahern unveiled a statue of General Sam Houston at Main Street and Elm Avenue in downtown Leander to commemorate the centennial of Houston's victory over Mexican forces at San Jacinto Creek on July 6, 1836.
