Leon Valley was a small farming town in south Texas that was established by settlers in the early 1800s. The community was located on the banks of the Brazos River, about three miles east of present-day Waco. The first post office in Leon Valley was established on May 15, 1857, and remained in operation until it closed on July 6, 1912. Many of the early residents were Dutch immigrants who brought their cows and pigs to graze along the riverbanks. By 1881, there were only a few hundred residents living in Leon Valley. However, during its heyday, Leon Valley had a population of around 1,500 people. Although most of the original settlers died during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), many new arrivals helped to establish Leon Valley as an agricultural center during this period. During World War II, many Leon Valleys residents enlisted in the military and served throughout Europe and Asia. Some notable members of this community include George Henson (1929-2002), who was captain at Fort Worth Air Force Base from 1970 to 1974; Everett “Dutch” Smith (1909-1989), who played football for Rice University from 1951 to 1957; Bud Reeves (b 1930), one of America’s most celebrated country music singers; and Clyde Tombaugh (1914-1998), an American astronaut who became one of history’s first astronauts
Leon Valley was founded in 1849 by James H. Leon and his brothers, George and John. The area that now includes Leon Valley was part of the Mexican land grant known as Rancho San Antonio de Sulphurio. In 1854, the Lons bought the rancho from the Mexican government for $3,000. The name of the community waschanged to Leon Valley in honor of James H. Leon Jr., one of its early settlers. In 1865, a post office was established at Leon Valley and remained in operation until 1886. A sawmill and gristmill were built in 1868 and 1870, respectively; these were replaced by a fertilizer plant in 1941. In 1896, a schoolhouse and church were built; this building served as both a local school and religious services until it burned down in 1954. A hospital was erected on the property in 1912; it closed down in 1958 due to budget cuts. The current district office building was completed on the same site in 1966; it serves as an administrative headquarters for theLeon Valley Independent School District.
