Levelland, Texas is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The Levelland post office has been in operation since 1879. The community of Levelland was founded by early settlers on the east side of the Brazos River in what is now Williamson County. In 1876, J.W. Weemer and his brothers built a log cabin near present-day Levelland on land they acquired from Big Jim Caldwell for $2 per acre (about $ today). The Weermers were among the first to settle in this rural location and named their new settlement after General James Hoggart's brigade that fought at Monterrey during the Mexican War. In 1878, Jules Boudreau moved to Levelland from Nacogdoches and started a grocery store called "The Gilded Cage" with two rooms in his home which he ran until 1899 when he sold it to Wm Morgan Cockerill who also opened a general store next door later that year known as "The Morgan Store". A post office was established at Levelland in 1879; it remained active until 1935 when it was discontinued due to limited mail volume. In 1886, John Fenton arrived from Illinois with his family and began ranching operations around present-day La Grange Creek Road north of town. He named his ranch "Fenton's Ranch", but it reverted back to its original name within five years because of confusion with another ranch run by future cattle rancher Jesse Pickett across town (Pickett's Ranch still exists). By 1901, most of Fenton’s holdings had been purchased by George Latham who had settled there about 1840 and renamed himself “Latham” after purchasing some 300 acres (1 km²) along Buffalo Bayou near where modern day downtown La Grange intersects I-35E near Presentation Hills Mall). Levelland experienced its first real growth during World War I when many local farmers became soldiers or bought exemptions from draft requirements. After the war ended, many returned to farming while others exercised their right under state law to vote without having to serveid or pay taxes like other citizens did during wartime times In 1923 construction began on what would become iconic Wilson High School located just south of town off FM 620 (Wilsonville Rd), which opened September 25th 1924 curriculum permitting students from all over Williamson County free tuition* This unique addition helped catalyze much economic development within our COMMUNITY over time! *Today Wilson High School offers acclaimed programs & services for all students including gifted/talented students!
