Levelland is a small town in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio–La Paz–Edinburg, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now comprising Levelland was first settled by Anglo-Saxon settlers in 1836. A post office was established here in 1847, and a store and hotel were built soon afterward. In 1851 the community took its name from James Halliday Levelland, an early settler and one of the incorporators of Bastrop County. A cotton gin was built here in 1865; it remains a prominent landmark in the town today. A railroad station was also constructed here in 1865; it served as both a commercial and passenger center for many years until it closed down around 1970. In 1924 local businessmen Harry Hildebrandt and Leonard Kapp bought 6 acres (2 hectares) northeast of town for $25000 to start a new agricultural community called Prairie View Station on what is now FM 522 near Interstate 35W east of Levelland (today's IH-35W exit 141). The developers envisioned concentrating farming activities around two cultural attractions: Prairie View Museum of Art and Prairie View Community College (now Prairie View University). However, plans to open up much more land led to economic failure within two years and the community closed down completely by 1930. Only about 20 residences remain extant from that time period; most have been replaced with modern housing developments over the intervening decades. Today there are just a few dozen people living downtown – mainly retirees or those who work at nearby schools or businesses like FedEx Ground or Tyson Foods Inc..
