Levelland, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,944 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1887 by John C. Levelland and his wife Sarah A. Levelland. The name comes from "Leeds", a small village in Yorkshire, England which they visited while on their honeymoon. They named their first home "Branch" after one of their children had polio there and needed to be hospitalized for weeks. After moving to Levelland, the Levellands built several more homes until they had six total – two of which still stand today within the limits of the town limits (the others have been torn down). In 1917, Levelland became an independent school district and changed its name to Hudspeth County Independent School District #1 (later renamed to Hudspeth County Independent School District #2). In 1924 it became an independent school district again when it merged with State School District No. 5 (later renamed to Austin-Round Rock) under Act No. 912 of 1923; however, that merger did not take place until 1984 due to lack of voter support at that time for such a move as it would have meant splitting hairs between two separate districts for administrative purposes only (Hudspeth County ISD#1 being headquartered in Round Rock while Hudspeth ISD#2 was headquartered in Lubbock). On November 2nd, 2018 local residents voted by referendum “to annex” neighboring unincorporated area Spring Branch into our town Limits thus giving us over 1K fewer people than we currently have!
