The National Guard of Texas was organized in 1907 as the Third Infantry Regiment. The regiment served in World War I and the Mexican-American War before being mobilized for the first time in 1932. In 1938, the regiment was redesignated as the Texas National Guard and kept its same name until 1941 when it was reorganized into two battalions, one located at Austin and one at San Antonio. In 1951, both battalions were consolidated into a single battalion under the command of Lieutenant Colonel (later General) Everett W. Smith. From 1951 to 1957, the battalion operated out of Fort Worth while also performing guard duty at various military installations around Texas. The battalion moved to Levelland in 1958 and has been headquartered there ever since. TheTexas National Guard's history can be traced back to 1907 when local citizens gathered together to form a group called "The Lone Star Legion" to support Spanish American War efforts in Levelland County. A few weeks later, on September 10th, 1907, Governor George Richards issued an executive order creating a state militia unit known as "The Third Infantry Regiment." Enrolling only men over 21 years old who had paid their own way into service, this new force numbered just 158 individuals but managed to successfully repel an attempted annexation by Mexico that October nightfall. In 1938, after World War II ended and all U.S.-based troops had returned home from Europe or Japan, state legislators decided thatTexans should have their own national guard unit which would keep them informed of events happening within their borders; thisunit would eventually become known as "the Texas National Guard". On January 1st of 1939 however, following passage of Republic Act No 1008 which created the United States Air Force (USAF), Army Reserve components throughout Texas were activated and assigned directly to USAF control; these units became known as Air Defense Command's (ADC) First Brigade Combat Team (1BCT). This left unoccupied what had once been The Third Infantry Regiment's seat at Levelland Armory; plans began immediately for how best TOG could best serve Texans during wartime times by becoming part of ADC's Cavalry Division!
