Levelland, Texas is a small town in Medina County, Texas that was founded on October 16, 1903. The name Levelland comes from the Choctaw word "levee" which means watercourse. At its peak in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Levelland had a population of over 1,000 people. Today, Levelland has a population of just over 100 people and it is located in Medina County. The town was first established as a farming community on land that now forms part of the city of Levelland. The first settlers were farmers who arrived in 1881 and began to grow crops. By 1904, the town had a post office and began to develop as an agricultural center with mills being built to produce flour and other goods. In 1907, the town annexed what is now the eastern side of Medina County. In 1916 local residents helped found the Medina County Agricultural Department which became one of the leading agricultural organizations in America. In 1932, when Texas became an independent state, Levelland voted to become its own county with its own government. Today, Levelland remains an important cultural and economic center for Medina County with industries including agriculture (flour milling and cattle), engineering (pumping stations for oil wells), health care (a hospital and several clinics), retail therapy (handicap parking lot) and manufacturing ( diverse products from textiles to aluminum).
