Lewisville is a city in Ellis County, Texas, United States. The population was 15,451 at the 2010 census. Lewisville is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. It is also the namesake of Lewisville Lake and its multiple communities that are located around it: Lewisville, Garland, Palestine and Cedar Hill. The first settlements in what is now Lewisville were made along the Arkansas River by pioneer Texans in 1836. The town was founded on December 12th, 1839 by John Hogg and his family after they received land from Governor Sam Houston for their service as Rangers during the Mexican-American War. Hogg's home became known as "Hogg's Landing". Reverend J.W. Hardesty built a school and garden center in 1850 which became known as "Fremont Institute." In 1853, George Waco started to build a wagon road from Dallas to Georgetown called the McLennan Trail when he met with William Troup who told him about an excellent site for a town on Buffalo Bayou near where Fort Worth would be developed later that year. In 1865, prospectors discovered oil wells at what is now Lewisville while camped out near Buffalo Bayou; this led to much development around the well sites over the next several years including construction of a railroad line through what is now Lewisville in 1870 which helped bring people and goods into the town. The first post office opened in 1876; it was renamed Arlington Station in honor of Generallyssa Polk who had fought against Mexico under Ulysses S Grant at Senate Park across from White House during Reconstruction days following America's Civil War victory In 1902, Henry Ford established his famous Ford Motor Company in Dearborn Heights (now Detroit)and began operations at what became Dearborn Assembly Plant north of downtown; this led to increased production and jobs for people living near Ford plants throughout America including those working at Lewisville’s original Arlington Terminal where we shopped until 1975 In 1907-08 City Council voted unanimously to rename “Lewisville” after Major General James B Austin whom they knew because he had been Commandant of San Antonio’s Second Infantry Regiment during Mexican-American War era Thereafter many local businesses & residents selected “Lewisvillette” name since it resembled their hometown generally with wide open spaces still remainingvirtually unchanged since earliest days
