The city was founded in 1879 by Charles Goodyear and his brother Edwin Goodyear, two entrepreneurs who had come from England to start a new company that would make tires for horses. Little Elm is a small town located in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Little Elm was founded in 1876 by John and Mathilda Hendrickson as a cotton plantation on what is now Saginaw Street. The Hendricksons were originally from Illinois. The town began to grow quickly after it was platted in 1879. In 1881, Little Elm acquired its first schoolhouse and soon became an important stop on the Santa Fe Railway. By 1886, Little Elm had developed enough that it decided to become its own municipality. A municipal election held that year resulted in the incorporation of Little Elm as a city with a mayor and five council members. The growth of Little Elm slowed after World War I but resumed during World War II when the city built an air force general hospital and several other public buildings including City Hall and White Sands Park (now Mesquite Park). The post-war boom brought new businesses to town such as Waffle House fame and many homes were constructed during this time period using recycled materials from previous construction projects or demolition of existing structures for brick or wood products factories or warehouses which sprang up all around town due to postwar demand for housing developments near military bases across the nation In 1957, consolidation of local government withinDallas led to annexation by Dallas of nearby Frisco followed by Lufkin in 1978 making Little Elm one entity with two mayors – one for each city – until 1984 when Mayor Jerry Hardin resignedeffective because he did not want his wife living contiguous with him while he served out his full term unexpiredby law . In 1992 Mayor Michael Easley designated Frisco as annexee status once again creating more than one municipality withinDallas county . In 1999 both cities voted to secede fromDallas County effective January 1 following years of conflict over funding issuesrelated primarily to zoning changes contained withinEasley's proposed master plan for both cities which would result in high-rise buildings outside their respective downtowns . After much legal wrangling over whether secession actually violated state law governing municipalities’ separation referendum results finally went into effect on January 1 , 2001 resulting in Lufkin becomingthe first municipality everto secede fromDallas County while Frisco retains full statuswithin Dallas
