Live Oak is a city in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2000 census. It is the seat of Johnson County. Live Oak is located on the Brazos River and its site was once part of the Edwards Plateau. The first settlers in Live Oak were families from Easton, Pennsylvania who arrived in 1851. They named their new town after a live oak that grew near their farmstead. By 1870, most of what is now Live Oak had been platted and it served as an agricultural center for much of central Texas. In 1881, surveyors noted that there were no trees to be found within two miles (3 km) of where Live Oak now stands; this must have been because Native Americans had removed most all natives east of the Brazos River before white settlement began. In 1886, Herman Shoup founded Joplin-based Webb Oil Company and leased land northeast of Live Oak from the Mexican government for oil exploration purposes. Webb became one of the largest landowners in Texas during this time and developed a large oil refinery complex on his property which still stands today (now part of ExxonMobil). In 1901–1902, he donated $10 million to build Baylor University's magnificent McLennan Stadium which seated over 100,000 people when it opened in 1902 as home field for Baylor football and baseball teams until 2002 when it was replaced by Reliant Stadium adjacent to downtown Houston due to stadium construction projects initiated by Mayor Bill White after Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans seven years earlier. During World War II many workers coming off war jobs built military bases around Austin or nearby San Antonio including Fort Bliss southward along I-35W from Live Oak through Waco into Eagle Ford Valley; Camp Roberts northward along I-10E out past Arlington outside Plano; Pharr Air Force Base southeastward from Lufkin just inside Orange County into Comal County across Frome Lake into Nueces County; Goodyear Air Force Base northwestward from Kerrville just outside Hudspeth County intoillo County nominally administered by Garland AFB but actually under direct control of Army Major General James Hogg at Far West Army Depot southwest corner Rio Grande near present day Midland - these installations became known collectively as “The GIs” or "Goodyear Strip". They were able to start their own businesses and create new lives for themselves and their families. And although some locals struggled during this time - like when oil prices plummeted during the 1990s - most people here stuck together through thick and thin. In recent years, LiveOak has seen some growth both within its community itself (the number of residents grew from 1,527 at the 2000 census to 2,023 at the 2010 census) as well as outside of it (the number of visitors increased from 793 at the 2000 census to 1,977 at the 2010 census). This growth has come thanks not just to newcomers but also to various initiatives spearheaded by officials here – like Welcome Back Orange Blossom campaign which encourages people from other parts of Texan towns or counties vacationing in live oak every year; or plans for a new business park that will help promote local businesses throughout the area; or increasing funding available for infrastructure projects like bike paths and better water supplies among others!
