Military gift history in Live Oak, Texas can be traced back to the early 1800s. One of the first businesses in Live Oak was a grocery store, which operated from 1836-1860. The store was later renamed the Post and Mail Store. In 1860, Captain John Cavanaugh established a military post at Live Oak. The post served as a base of operations for Confederate forces during the American Civil War. In 1865, Captain Cavanaugh's post was disbanded and all military activity stopped in Live Oak. In 1919, Lieutenant Colonel James Melson established an airfield at Live Oak which served as a training ground for future fighter pilots. After World War II ended, Air Force officer Major General Dwight Eisenhower moved his headquarters to Live Oak and began exercises there throughout the summer of 1945 preparatory to invading Japan. On July 30th 1945, General Eisenhower made an announcement that he had ordered Operation Overlord and invaded Japan;Live Oak became one of several stops on his tour of duty throughout Southeast Asia. After World War II ended, many weapons were destroyed or mothballed by the United States government because they no longer functioned safely or effectively after years of use in warfare. Many these weapons were reactivated by private individuals or groups who purchased them before their destruction or mothballing occurred. Some examples include: assault rifles that were reactivated by George Mowers after they were destroyed by the government; shotguns that were reactivated by Bob Fenton after they were destroyed by the government; tanks thatwere reactivated by Rick Boyer after they were destroyed by Army artillery fire during World War II; and missiles thatwere reactivatedby Don Armstrong after he acquired them from retired Sergeant First Class Kenneth Hensley during Operation Desert Storm). Live Oak's history dates back to 1884 when it was established as a cattle town on the banks of the Trinity River. The first phase of growth and development took place during World War II when the city became a major military base. In 1968, Live Oak became anindependent municipality, and since then has undergone a rapid growth process led by its now internationally renowned university, Houston Baptist University (HBU), which opened its doors in 1987. The city's roots can be found in 1884 when it was established as a cattle town on the banks of the Trinity River. At that time, there were no towns within San Antonio County and only one small agricultural community - Slaughtering Station on Hwy 290 - had any residents. The town quickly developed into an important transportation center due to its location close to several rivers and highways. By 1920, Live Oak had over 30 businesses and 2 churches; however, by 1930 it only had 10 businesses and 1 church. During World War II, Live Oak became a major military base thanks to its proximity to Fort Sam Houston (later Presidio) on San Antonio Creek adjacent to what is now downtown San Antonio. More than 1 million servicemen and women from all over America trained at Fort Sam Houston during World War II before returning home or being deployed elsewhere in Europe or Asia. Thanks also to this war era boom period for LiveOak – including construction of two large hospitals – many families living nearFort SamHouston increased their income significantly through new business ventures such as retail stores/grocery stores/meatpacking plants etc., creating what we call "the post-war boom." However by 1968 LiveOak had become an independent municipality with its own government system which allowed for more rapid growth throughout subsequent decades characterized by increasing job opportunities for both men and women along with continued suburbanization of areas surrounding downtown due largely to oil discoveries made outside of LivingOak proper; although much current infrastructure has been built during this time including: hospital buildings (most notably HBU), Sadler Road Bridge & Muni Light Rail Transit Station (opened 2004), Downtown streetscape renovation project completed in 2013
On July 7, 1878, the first live oak in Texas was cut down by naturalists working for the U.S. government to study tree growth and rarity.
