Lockhart is a small town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,049 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Midland County. The land that would become Lockhart was first settled by Miwok Indians in the 1820s. A post office was organized in 1828 and named for James Lockhart, an employee of the Mexican government who had journeyed west to rancho grants near San Angelo. In 1847, John Gorman founded what would become Gorman cotton gin and mill on what is now Main Street. By 1850, there were ten settlers living in Lockhart; six men and four women. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to attack Harper's Ferry and called for reinforcements from Fort Worth. Lt.-Colonel Nathaniel Pemberton ordered Major William Jarrell to lead a detachment of soldiers into Harper's Ferry to help with this effort but when they arrived they found only about sixty men under Pemberton's command and no artillery or cavalry available so he remained behind to garrison the fortifications while his units moved northward into Virginia. On July 4th 1861 (the day after Union forces sacked Harpers Ferry), Ewell attacked Harper's Ferry again with more than two thousand Confederate troops but this time local militia repelled him with heavy losses; however many supplies were lost along the way as well as any munitions captured by Ewell including cannons used against Sherman's army at Gettysburg later that year. lockhart tx

There were 1,055 housing units at an average density of 639.9 per square mile (251.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; and 2% from two or more races.
