The Texas National Guard was organized on November 3, 1846. The first national guard unit was the 1st Battalion of the Texas Rangers. On May 15, 1847, the 2nd Battalion of the Texas Rangers was activated and became part of the 1st regiment of volunteers. On February 14, 1849, Governor Allan McAllister announced that a state militia could be called into service to protect against Indian threats in centralTexas. The regiment grew rapidly and by 1850 had become known as Company E (the “Lockhart Regiment”). On November 5th, 1850, Captain John Pemberton ordered all Companies A-F to ready for muster out effective at 4 p.m., effective December 7th in order to form Company G (the “Gadsden Regiment”) which would garrison Fort Brown. This leftlockhart Texan men without their own regiment until 1861 when they were reorganized as Company H (the “Hawkins Regiment”) under Colonel James Dyer and served with distinction throughout the Civil War including being present at Paducah Green Court House where General Robert Ewell surrendered his army to Ulysses S Grant on April 9 1865.
Lockhart is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Lockhart was founded in 1873 by John Lockhart and his wife Catharine McNaught. The first post office was established here in 1874. Lockhart is located on FM 169 about northeast of Austin and south of Round Rock. In 1915, James A. Beaumont began operating a flour mill in Lockhart which led to its current name (after James A. Beaumont). In 1924, the first electric Cooperative store opened in this town; it continued to operate until 1996 when it became part of TXCOM Incorporated (formerly known as American Electric Power Company). In 2002,lockhart'sFriendship Arena opened with playgrounds for 6-year olds and an adult activity center for seniors called " Olson Family Place". This facility also includes a restaurant/bar on the premises calledthe Old Mill Inn & Grill which serves up local cuisine as well as gasoline station items such as snacks, burgers and fries all day long! lockhart also has two fireplaces: one outdoors (in the Friendship Arena) and one inside the community building that opens up into a large living room area with several couches and sofas for seating both inside and outside during warm weather months!

The name of Lockhart comes from George Washington Lockhart and his brother John who settled there in 1849. George Washington Lockhart was a general in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War and died in battle at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
In 1892, Lockhart was founded as a town in Hudspeth County by pioneers. The community grew quickly because of its natural resources and the new railroad that came through the area. In 1907, the Texas legislature passed an act legalizing towns in Hudspeth and Travis counties. By 1912, Lockhart had a population of 511 people and it became one of the first towns in Texas to be organized under state law. In 1946, Lockhart was incorporated as a city with a population of 906 people. It has since grown to become one of the most populous cities in Texas.
