Lockhart is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 692 at the 2010 census. The community of Lockhart was started by two families on October 25, 1881. A post office called Lockhart was established in 1882, and the name changed to Lockhart in 1893. The first town meeting was held on November 3, 1892. The first election for township trustees took place on December 4, 1912. One of the most important events in Lockhart's history happened when oil wells were drilled nearby and production began in 1915. This helped to spur development and growth throughout the early 1900s; many businesses opened up and people began moving into the community from other parts of Tarrant County. Today, Lockhart is known as an oil capital of North Texas because it has been home to several major companies that have played a significant role in the local economy over the years: Shell Oil Company (1915), Texaco Incorporated (1936), ChevronTexaco Corporation (2000), and ConocoPhillips Company (2006). In 1867, James Lockhart settled in what is now Lockhart, Texas. He and his wife Anna established the first post office in the area. The town was named for James Lockhart and his wife, who were instrumental in its development. In 1875, a railway was built through the area and named the Texas Central Railroad. The town quickly became an important transportation hub, serving as a departure point for travelers traveling to Dallas and other parts of the state. The railroad also brought new settlers to Lockhart, many of whom worked on the railroad or opened their homes in town. By 1930, however, most of the residents had left for better opportunities elsewhere in Texas or Oklahoma.
