Lockhart, Texas is a small town located in Midland County, Texas, about eighty-five miles (130 km) east of Dallas. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1879 by John Lockhart and his wife Sarah. The original name for the community was "Johnstown." The first store in Lockhart opened in 1879. In 1887, the town had two churches: First Baptist and Second Presbyterian. In 1896, there were four schools: Lockhart School District No. 2; Indian Hill School District No. 3; and West Side Elementary School District No. 4 which served students from Lockhart village as well as residents of other nearby communities such as musical instruments and groceries to be delivered to their homes on horseback or carriages drawn by horses or mules. In 1951, an oil field was discovered in western Midland County and soon production began bringing new life to Lockhart Center Business Park which consisted of six warehouses used for storing crude oil products from the field until it could be processed into gasoline, kerosene, lubricants and other materials needed for industry The post office opened on October 24th 1925 with Pte J M Kline as the first mail carrier In 1955-1960 three high school programs operated out of lockheart center: English I-III (later renamed East High School), Science I-III (later renamed North High School) and Math/Science I & II (now known as Lamar University High School). A fourth program - Gifted Education -opened in 2003 when Lamar University merged its programs with East High Schools .lockheart center also became home to a variety of auxiliary businesses including a beauty parlor, social service agency and an auto body shop before ceasing operations in 2006 due to budgetary constraints
